About this Site
This website contains all the photos from my international travels starting in graduate school. At some point I might add photos from non-boring places in the United States. I have kept commentary to a minimum, since the photos convey more than I could. Plus, who really wants to read rambling? I'll fill in if there is a particular anecdote or detail that the photos have not captured.
About Me
Most of my global excursions have been made possible thanks to academic conferences and support from my graduate program and employers. My first trip outside the U.S. was a major one--a trip to Australia with my mother when I was six and again when I was eight. Those trips instilled in me two deep desires: 1) to explore new places often and 2) to get back to Australia permanently, some day.
I enjoy travel for the obvious reasons--experiencing new cultures, visiting historically significant places, learning (bits and pieces) of different languages, new adventures for my palate, seeing some of the best museums and galleries in the world. I also enjoy travel for some reasons that are perhaps more idiosyncratic. This travel website captures my time traveling (mostly) alone. Before my first major trip as a graduate student (to Rotterdam, Netherlands), I worried that traveling alone would be intensely lonely. It was hard to imagine visiting exciting places without a companion to share in the experiences. But I was wrong. Traveling alone is awesome. It is freeing to be accountable to no one and nothing, for a little while anyway (for the record, I don't romanticize what Paul Gauguin did). When I am alone after a conference, choosing what to do day-by-day by the seat of my pants, going through novels on trains, and taking a hiatus from regular internet access...I gain a peace that is otherwise hard to find.
